Harsh Living Conditions In A Castle

Despite their grandeur, castles were not the most comfortable places to live. They were often cold and damp, with drafts seeping through the thick stone walls. Heating was limited to large fireplaces, and during winter, inhabitants relied on heavy tapestries and furs to keep warm.

Health and Hygiene

Maintaining health and hygiene was a significant challenge. Medical knowledge was rudimentary, and diseases could spread rapidly in the confined quarters of a castle. Sanitation was another major issue, with waste disposal systems being primitive and contributing to the spread of illnesses.

Security and Warfare

The constant threat of invasion and warfare loomed over castle inhabitants. Lords had to ensure their castles were well-defended, which required a constant state of vigilance and a well-trained garrison. Sieges were particularly grueling, often lasting months and resulting in severe hardship for the defenders.
