Biella and Oropa Sanctuary, Italy
BIELLA is my new home, and I explore this little, but very nice town situating between Turin and Milan, Italy, when I have time and the weather is good enough. Today, I'll show you an interesting building - the Dom.

The very large square was a cloister before, and the religious complex included the gotic bell-tower you see on my photo, baptistery (maybe, the oldest building of the town, because it's from the XI century) and other buildings. I imagine that it was a territory completly dedicated to the religious  and pilgrims. Some streets stil remember their original functions, like the Capuchin Uphill. Probably the monks had to reach  the sanctuary of Oropa.

Very interesting is the internal ornament of the Dom. Honestly, I've never seen anything similar before.
All the walls seem to be made from marbles etc and to have many statues. But they are painted! The tecnic is trompe l'oeil, optical illusion. And the colors are green-grey.
This work was created in 1784 by Giovannino Galliari and C°.

Cheap Vacation in Amalfi Coast - Choose Salerno
Amalfi Coast is one of the most desired places for a vacation in Italy, but the prices of the accomodations and meals are too high there. What can we do to lower the expences? We can choose an other modality of accomodation and pay less for our meals, too.

If you do not want to sleep in a tend and eat only essential foods like bread, we can find prices of everything about 3 times lower in the nearby town, the capital of the province, Salerno.

I love Salerno. It's a very nice and calm little town (about 135 000 residents, I think) with very rich on historical places old, early Medieval, town and cured, very sympatic new parts. Seaside is about 6 km-s long and there is very good bicicle road till Paestum.

On this photo you can see the best, newest and biggest hotel of the town. There is a great underground parking (green place for the hotel).

Salerno, as a capital, has nightlife possibilities, and there are many pizzerias, bars and other places where you can eat good and cheap foods at any time of the day

But the most important thing for those who is interested in cultural program, is the excellent strategical position of this town. Yuou need maximum 40 minutes to reach Naples, Caserta/Capua, Pompei, Paestum. If you want to visit Messina, you have to travel with modern trains only 3 hours. Or, if you want to walk one day in Venice, you can take a night train, come in Venice in the morning, stay there one day and turn in Salerno with the night train the same evening. I do so everytime I have a wish to pass one day in Venice.

Salerno has not only 4 stars hotels and residences. There are some hostels like this one in my photo, where you can sleep paying from 10 to 15 euros per night. You can control real time offers in Salerno here:

Some steps to go out in the maine street and you can eat "panino" like this in my photo paying 3 euros for it. If you take water with you, you don't need other expences for your lunch. "Panino" is big, with meat and vegetables (you can choose what you want to eat) and it's enough to continue your explorations.

My advice, if you want to go in an other place, in Pompei or Paestum or on the beach, is to take your lunch here, in Salerno. Even if you will find many places where to eat everywhere.

We’d love to hear your comments and experiences. Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question, below, in the comment section.

Free Private Bay in Amalfi Coast - It's Possible

If you like to have very special and "exotic" swimming experiences, you have to visit this very little "private bay" of Punta S. Elia. You have to cross the mountains from Sorrento to arrive there, and this is not very easy walk, but the path is very beautiful and you will remember it for many years.

From the other side, if you live in Sorrento during your vacation, you can go to Punta S.Elia at feet and it's perfectly free. :-)

Do You Know How To Visit Naples?

Naples is probably one of the cities with the most rich history in the world. Every step you do there, believe me, can tell you not one but different stories. And it's normal because this place was among the favourite aims of generations of the conquerors. In this post I'll tell you only about 3 of the treasures of Naples.

First and second of tham you will find in Piazza Mercato.
This is really great place to listen to the stories. But rarely a "wild" "external" tourist would visit it.
Here is the church basilica-sanctuary Santa Maria del Carmine.

Sea and Mountains - Perfect Vacation in Amalfi Coast, Italy!

If you love sea and mountains, the best solution for your summer vacation is Amalfi Coast.
This is the best period to book your hotel if you want to find still good prices. Curious is how many persons book their vacations in this period. Give a look here: hotel bookings in Vietri  They letterally fly on this most popular search engine.

Here I want to show you my favourite way from Raito to the beach in Vietri Sul Mare. It's not long, but clean and the stairs are not very hard to climb to turn back. I use this way because I like the beach, first. Than, I do not like to climb back the ways in the town of Vietri. I think, the return is much more difficult there.

Rome - Visiting Julius Cesar's Murder Place

Last time we left our one hour walk in Rome visiting Trajan's Column and the maine tourists attraction in Rome - the Imperial Fora.

Today, we will visit Largo Argentina and the Julius Cesar's murder place. All the itinerary was not long and we reached this place without long stops in about 30 minutes.

We all are fascinated by the life story of Julius Cesar and when I knew where the place of his dead and funeral fire are, I wanted absolutely to visit them. These are 2 different places. Here, in Largo Argentina, was the Curia Julius Cesar wanted to visit in the last day of his life even if he felt danger and was warned to be careful. He was murdered and left for some hours in Curia. The murders were so much frightened of their own crime that went away when they understood what they did to themselves (all of them were punished in short time). After that, the loyal citizens took the body of Julius Cesar in an other place. You will find it if you visit Imperial Fora. He was burned there even if it was stricktly forbidden to burn bodies inside the cities.

All the Argentina square is a big excavation site, and we come there from this side:

From Amalfi To Emerald Grotto, By Feet

Many persons come in Amalfitan Coast to have speial conditions for their favourite hobbies. Trekking, hiking, snorkeling, running etc - there is place for every passion here. During my walks, I often meet solitary persons or couples or groups of people. Somebody has even sleeping bags over their backpacks.

Personally, I never had the possibility to stay for 2 and more days on the mountains, but I have friends that do it regularly. So, if you want, you can think about this itinerary, too. There are many sources on the mountains and you can meet houses and even restaurants etc there, so you do not need to have great quantities of food and water with you.

It's always better to go with a local guide - there are many residents in Campania that love their moutains so much. If you want, you can write me, too, I'll give you the contacts. The only problem is that they rarely speak other languages except italian. But it's not mortal in any case.

One Hour in Rome - Trajan's Column

We began this walk near the central railway station of Rome, Roma Termini ( One or Two Hours in Rome, Italy) with the intention to see as much as possible in one or two hours we have between two trains, because we presume we have to continue our trip.

I said you, we can visit and see many interesting places and national treasures. Two of them I described you in the second post of this serie: Rome, Italy - Treasures Of The Art on Every Step

Today, we continue our adventure long the via Nazionale to the Trajan's Column and Altar of the Fatherland, the white monument with grey statue you see in the background of the photo.

Rome, Italy - Treasures Of The Art on Every Step

Visit Rome in one day is possible in sense that where you go, you always find something extraordianry and fantastic. In my previous post ( One or Two Hours in Rome, Italy )we began to walk in the direction of Largo Argentina where we have to visit the place of the murder of Julius Cesar.

There are thousands of ways to go there, but we choosed the most short one from Roma Termini. We will arrive there in 25 minutes and turn back in 1 hour. The view from Piazza della Repubblica arrives to the end of the street, so we have to reach what we see there very far.

One or Two Hours in Rome, Italy

Is it possible to visit most important sightseeings of Rome in one-two hours?

You will not agree with me, probably, but if we do not use maximum of the situations the life presents us, we would never enjoy many pleasures. So, this is what happend to me many many times. Why?

I live in Italy for 22 years. And only last 10 of them I began to visit places I dreamd to see all my life. I never had time to rest some days in Rome or in other cities, but I passed them some times a year. It's impossoble to me to leave the house for more than 1-2 days and I always book my tickets so that I can turn back as soon as possible.

But one day I had to wait my second train for 2 hours in Rome. I bought a map of the city and studied the places I could visit in these 2 hours.

Fabulous Vacation? Amalfi e Sorrento Coast - Mount Faito

Do you dream about a fabulous vacation? Look at this place on a mountain over Amalfi and Sorrento Coast. The mount Monte Faito is very popular and beloved for it's very interesting position that dominates all the Coast from Naples to Amalfi and it's possible to see both gulfs, of Naples and of Salerno from there. And the magic does not finished here because you can see the big islands, too, Capri and Ischia.

Pompei - Very Important Christian Sanctuary and other Mysteries of Campania

Most of us think that Pompei are simply an excavation site. Very famous, the nost famous in the world, but only an archeological territory bounded to the Roman Empire.

It's not so.

Actually, Pompei is a little modern town with 3 different railway lines and autobus lines that connect it to Naples and Salerno, the nearby capitals of the provinces of this region (Campania).

This modern town was born around a very important sanctuary. The cathedral is The Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei. The image of Madonna is infinitely beloved by the local population so that you can meet entire families walking till Pompei for many km-s two times a year to ask the Mother├Čof Jesus Christ for miracle. My neighbours walk even 15 km-s to visit the Shrine in May
The Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei
If you go in the crypt of the Shrine, you will see many many ex-votes, gifts remembering the grace received from Our Lady of the Rosary.

Amalfi - The Valley of the Foundries, Full Itinerary

There are not so many places in the world famous as the Valley of the Foundries (Valle delle Ferriere) in Amalfi, Italy. It's impossible that you go in vacation in Amalfi Coast and did not hear about it. It's like the Path of the Gods, the must to visit for everybody who loves nature, mountains, trekking.

There are many ways to visit this valley, some of them are very easy (from Pomerano) or very easy (from Amalfi), but if you like more exciting walks, even EE++, you will go down from S.Lazzaro to Amalfi. You can reach S.Lazzaro with an autobus from different places. From Amalfi, too.

There are different possibilities to begin your walk from S.Lazzaro. Here are some photos of our last trekking some days ago.

Messina the Gate of the Sicily

Messina is the first town you enter when you go with a train in Sicily.

Yes, you understood it correctly: you can visit all the towns of Sicily coming from Salerno with a train. You simply arrive with your train in Villa San Giovanni, a port in front of Messina. Your train enters in a special ship and continues it's way after half an hour in Sicily.

You arrive there from Salerno in 5 hours. There are 3 trains a day with the last stop Palermo. So, you can take Intercity Night and arrive in Palermo in the morning.

How to Reach Positano in Amalfi Coast from Salerno, Italy

Visited Salerno yesterday and had to help a young couple to go to Positano.

If you do not know it, Positano is a little beautiful village, a nice dream of many persons. The problem is that is is situated in a very inaccessible place. Both from Naples/ Sorrento and from Salerno the way to reach it is complicated.
Here, in this post, I'll explain you how can you reach Positano from Salerno.

When you arrive in Salerno with a train and go out on the square of the railway station, you will see this:

Vietri Sul Mare - if You Arrived With a Train There

Amalfi Coast is caracterized by infinite stairways and it has to be hard to find the shortcuts, if you come for the first time there. You look for the roads and have to walk much more this way.

From the other side, not all persons feel comfortable to use stairs. Specially, if you have luggages with you...

I'll show you how to find stairways when you have to move on the Amalfi coast.

So, here we are arrived in Vietri Sul Mare with a train.
Personally, I've never seen this station (building) open, so I come there with a ticket that I purchase in an other place, always.

From the second track (Salerno direction) we have to go out where you see the cars on my first photo. You can go down long the car road, but there is a shortcut - stairscase just behind the cars.

How To Reach Raito in Amalfi Coast or How to Travel in Train in Italy

Well, you are right and thanks to my visitors who are so interested in reading my blog of short travel advices that ask me for additional information.

Yes, the most easy way to reach Amalfi coast by earth is to take train or bus.
Trains come from Naples and Salerno, too. If you arrived with a train in Salerno, it's possible to continue with the train to Vietri Sul Mare/Amalfi Coast (it's the exact name of the station).
If you come from Naples, I suggest you to take a ferry. You will arrive at your destination faster. But it will cost much more than the "normal" way by train/bus.

How to Reach Raito, Amalfi or any Town of Amalfi Coast

1/ train from Naples to Vietri Sul Mare
2/ train to Salerno, than bus to Amalfi (the best)
3/ train to Salerno, than train to Vietri Sul Mare, than bus to Amalfi
4/ ferry both from Naples or Salerno

Traditional Neapolitan Street Food and Pastiera

Street Food is one of the Neapolitan traditions that we not always understand. When you come here and think about your meals, you think about all kinds of restaurants. And there are many of them on every step.

I noticed this difference from other regions of Italy: we have a bar, a trattoria, a restaurant, an osteria, a pizzeria, o'per o'muss, stuzziccheria, paninoteca, bruschetteria etc etc etc at least one every 10 meters. You never have to look where to eat here. You have only understand what do you like more.

One of the most popular is PANINO. It's a kind of sandwich where you can ask to ad anything you like. The table is more or less like this:

White Truffle in the streets of Alba (CN), Italy
Do you like Truffle? There is a very nice place in Piedmont (Italy) where you can taste and purchase white truffle every weekend walking in the streets. This town's name is Alba and it is situated in the province of Cuneo, not too far from Turin.
This town has interesting and antique origins, but we did not have time for something except a short walk. We ate in one of the little restaurants (I think, they are more or less good in all the regions of Italy). The difference of this town is that you can ask to add white truffle to some of the plates in the menu. BUT you have to understand that the price will be different. You have to see it in the menu somewhere.

Visit Historical Places: Where the Queen Drowned Her Lovers

Vesuvius influences the minds of the persons of all the times, I think. If you come to visit Naples or Amalfitan Coast, you will hear many many curious stories about the strange behaviour of their residents. Including ghost stories.

Vesuvius seen from Sorrento
This is one of them.

It happend when the old princess, sister of the king Ladislaus of Naples, became queen Johanna II of Naples. She is still very famous to change her favourites very frequently, some of them, young, she took in a roman villa not far from Sorrento where drowned them after a night of love. This is why they call it "Bagni della Regina" (Bath of the Queen)
It's what you will hear about her.

The truth is, probably, very different and the explanation of these legends is in the rich immagination of the subjects of the queen. But the ruins of the roman villa actually exist, they are spectacular, with a little "pond" with a tunnel to the sea
and they are easy and free to access.

How to reach this place, Bagni della Regina?

It's enough to take a bus to CAPO di Sorrento near the railway station of Sorrento, Circumvesuviana.
There are different busses that you can take to return than. They have tickets in the bus. This is why you do not need to buy 2 tickets (go and return) when you go to visit the ruins. The pricce of the ticket is about euro 1,20

What do you need for this visit?

It's enough to have your swimmwear.
The street that goes to the villa ("Roman Ruins") is narrow, but very good. There are rocks near the sea, but they are not difficult for a walk.
And there are some places where you can stay and swim.

And here are some photos to show you what you will see there:

Many boats take their passengers to the Baths of the Queen, Capo di Sorrento, Italy

Rocks under the ruins of roman villa, Capo di Sorrento, Italy

Rests of the floor mosaic of the Roman Ruins, Capo di Sorrento, Italy

On this "bridge" you will find a hole (visible from the water, too) that served to throw down unlucky favourite

Be careful when you go down and up, too

From Sorrento To Positano By Foot

The best thing you can do if you come in Amalfi or Sorrento Coast is to cross the mountains by foot (better if with a guide). The place you booked to overnight is very beautiful, sure, THESE for example are really fantastic), but if you are not a fan of staying all the days of the vacation on the beach, it will become sad after one-two days. Just because there is nothing to do and it's difficult enough to leave and to turn back, there.

So, what can you do to have unforgettable vacation? Specially, if it's not your favorite hobby (It's FIRST Time! Imagine!!!)?
Go cross the mountains.

How It Happened That I Visited Frankfurt am Main

This beautiful city I visited on my way to Italy after a ritrit. I normally buy the tickets online in advance and I had a flight from the airport of Frankfurt am Main. It was my first time there and I went directly in the airport just to take my flight. The surprize was that I came in a wrong airport. Because there are 2 of them there.

Nothing to do, I had to purchase a very very expensive ticket and had some long hours to wait for this flight.

Yes, it was terrible, but it was the only solution.

Immagine all the happiness I felt in that moment. But since it happend this way, I decided to visit the city.

I have to say you, it was a cultural chock for me. I did not expect to see such a strange and harmonious city with new and old buildings twisted perfectly together.

But the very best were the persons, the citizens there.
Everybody I asked about help tried to explain me what to do, where to go, how much time I have etc. They even went with me to show me the shortest way or the right platform in the metro... Honestly, I was afraid that I will have problems to turn back in the airport, but the residents were so friendly, so pacient with me.

The first I've seen when I came in the city were these different stalls. There were incalculable :-) varieties of fast food most of them I've never seen before. Everything was just ready for busy and hastening passengers of the trains. Probably, they come some later, because there were only some persons in the streets that morning.

Here are some shorts from Frankfurt am Main. Hope, I could show how beautiful is it.
