It's not so.
Actually, Pompei is a little modern town with 3 different railway lines and autobus lines that connect it to Naples and Salerno, the nearby capitals of the provinces of this region (Campania).
This modern town was born around a very important sanctuary. The cathedral is The Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei. The image of Madonna is infinitely beloved by the local population so that you can meet entire families walking till Pompei for many km-s two times a year to ask the Motherìof Jesus Christ for miracle. My neighbours walk even 15 km-s to visit the Shrine in May

But the Shrine is very beautiful and it's a good idea, if you come to visit Pompei, to enter the Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary first.
It is situated in front of the mail railway station of Pompei and only 500 meters from the entrance of the Excavation, Amphitheatre. You will need about an hour to go out for this "extra" walk: from the train, visit the sanctuary and arrive to the Amphitheatre.
Not only it's interesting to visit for Christians, but if you confront the culture of the Roman and previous times, you will see that there are many similar sides in believes of the persons 3 and more thausands of years ago and today. Generally, Campania is a real treasure for those who studies antique believes and rituals since you can find continuity everywhere here.
Actually, the pagan Roman rituals are very popular. On this photo you can see, fofr example 4 girls in the Valley of Amalfi chanting an invocation of Afrodite.
If you visit the memorial cemetery Delle Fontanelle in Naples, you will see and hear from your guide many strange things (I absolutly do not advice you to go there without a guide or somebody who will accompain you there).
The other very interesting place in this sense is the Tomb of Virgil, not far from the Mergellina stop of local train in Naples.
