When Is The Best Time To Visit Italy? And Other Popular Questions

Italy is a country that many of us see as a paradise. In a certain sense, this is true. Even the Italians call their homeland Belpaese, "The beautiful country". But even a not very demanding tourist could encounter some problems by visiting Italy in a period unsuitable for their needs.

As a foreigner who has lived in Italy for thirty years and works with foreigners, I will try to give some answers to the frequently asked questions of those who want to come and visit it for the first time.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Italy?

It depends firstly on your climate preferences, but also thinking about the climate changes in recent years, I would say that the worst months for a holiday in Italy are mid-July-mid-August (too hot) and November (heavy rain). Also to be avoided is the last week of August — first of September (possibility of heavy rain).

What is the best month to go to Italy?

The best periods, in my opinion, are the second half of April-June (June — especially in the high mountains) and then the second half of September-October.

What is the cheapest month to travel in Italy?

I think that the cheapest are the winter months in places where the season is over, that is, further south and in the seaside areas. But I must say that even in the warmer months, there are sometimes interesting opportunities.

What months are hot in Italy?
Of course, you can't guess what the weather will be like this year. Especially because the seasons as they once were when we were young no longer exist. Even the locals say so. When I lived near Naples, people told me that it used to snow there in the winter. Not any more today.
When I moved to Biella where I live now, everyone said that this is the rainiest place in all of Piedmont. However, now this is no longer the case.
But normally the hottest months are July and the first half of August. This doesn't say it can't be hot in September or May-June. For people who live in Nordic countries, it is always better to have something to protect them from the sun. How many times do you see tourists as red as a chili pepper without any kind of protection...

What month does everything close in Italy?

25 years ago, this question was perhaps current. Not anymore today. Usually in August, all the cities were completely deserted, and all businesses closed. Then, you will remember, when one year many elderly people who remained in their homes while the whole family was at sea, died since they couldn't find any bars, shops, or pharmacies open. It happened in Italy and France as far as I remember. After this tragedy, governments revised the laws and holiday opening times, and today in the cities you always find something open.
The problem is when we find ourselves in less touristy, mountainous areas, far from large centers.
Businesses can only be open for a few hours or not every day, hotels open by reservation only. In short, if you have to go to a place like this for a walk or to stay there, it is always better to be prepared: have a bottle of water and a sandwich and don't forget return tickets and an app with GPS on your mobile phone because there isn't always a normal line especially in the mountains.
And remember that shops may be closed between 12/1pm and (sometimes) 5pm. I once had to walk 10 kilometers home because everything in the village was closed until 5pm and the bus driver didn't want to take me without a ticket.

What is the prettiest month in Italy?

The most beautiful month in Italy in my opinion is May (June in the high mountains) when everything is in bloom. There are many villas and parks with flowers. Particularly those found at the lake or sea.

What is the rainiest month in Italy? Is there a rainy season in Italy?
According to my observations the rainy period is November. It usually rains even in the last week of August or before September and this is not very pleasant for a tourist also due to the sudden changes in temperature.
